Inlay Rings (Crushed Stone)

I like to make crushed stone inlays for my flutes. The picture series on the right should give an impression about the steps.

1. Create a groove to be filled. I usually target about 1mm depth depending on the size of the crushed stone.

2. I use thin CA glue and activator to fill the groove with the crushed stone.

3. Turning can be a pain but with sharp tools it should work. Make sure you are using a type of stone that is not too hard. There is actually a scale (MOHS scale) to find out about the hardness (see here). I would use stone with a maximum hardness of 5 on the MOHS scale. In the example flute I have used green Malachite stone which looks very nice and has a hardness of around 3-4.

Hint: I am using inlay rings especially when two different color woods are meeting and are not perfectly aligned e.g. in the gluing process of the two halves. Simply create a groove that covers the seem (see pictures).
